Keep Kids Safely Out Of Site! |
The purpose of this website is not to protect workers within the construction industry but the Public, especially young children from the activities of the construction industry namely Residential Builders. The law states that when there is no clear guidline as to safety procedure, the builder must take reasonable precautions and act with due diligence to ensure the safety of the public is not put at risk. The construction industry is without doubt one of the most dangerous industries to be involved in in Australia and indeed the world. Last year there were more deaths and injuries in this industry than in the ADF (Australian Defence Force), each state has it's own safety authority that strives to protect the workers within each state. The point very simply put is that building sites are always going to be dangerous places especially to minors, this fact will never change, the sole aim of this site is to encourage builders to take responsibility and do whatever is possible to prevent the public especially children from accessing their sites and that is by fencing them off with either temporary or permanent fencing that is fit for the purpose! There have been prosecutions in NSW for builders failing to fence off their sites, other states place the cost of fencing too high and do not enforce regulations to the letter. The NSW Gallery shows the contrasting situation clearly. An 8-year-old boy died in Auckland, New Zealand in 2004, let's hope it does not have to happen here in Australia.

They say a picture paints a thousand words, in this case you make up your own mind! The links above take you to galleries that show pictures taken in each state. When looking at the pictures please be aware of the fact that under law the builder or principal contractor must in his 'work method statement' include a 'risk assessment' that must identify if his actions pose a hazard and present a risk to any worker on the site or to the Public, especially children. All you have to decide is, do you think the builder has taken appropriate action to protect the public from his work site? This means taking reasonable precautions and acting with due diligence to ensure the safety of people other than his employees, this includes children living in the area where the work is taking place. All the pictures have been taken from a public access point (road or pathway) and in all cases residential developments that are surrounded by occupied dwellings.
