| The pictures below were taken in and around the suburb of Harrison in the ACT on the 19th February 2007. It would seem that trees afford more protection (1260 & 1266) in the ACT than do the public ,especially children! The following text is an exert from an ACT Workcover alert, of which three have been released in relation to fencing dangerous sites, two in 2006 and one in 2004. Workcover obviously realise that there is a safety issue. |
“To children, construction and demolition sites look like great places to explore and play. Unfortunately, the consequences of playing in these environments can be serious or fatal for the child” ACT WorkCover Commissioner/CEO Erich Janssen said. Risks include serious injury from falls from heights or machinery, electric shock from “live” cables, drownings, suffocation from collapsing material or coming into contact with hazardous substances. “People who exercise control over a construction worksite are reminded they have a duty under the Occupational Health and Safety Act 1989, to protect third parties, including children, from the hazards associated with worksites.” “This includes taking reasonably practicable steps to prevent unauthorised persons gaining access to the site” Mr Janssen said. Measures that can be taken include:

The question has to be asked, is ACT Workcover incapable or unable to ensure that Health and Safety Laws and Regulations are adhered to? Take a look at the pictures below and you decide! Compare these pictures with those in the NSW Gallery, they represent a stark contrast between attitude towards public safety. |
